JAZZ. SWING. BIG BAND SWING. BENNY GOODMAN, GLENN MILLER, COUNT BASIE, DUKE ELLINGTON, LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG… THERE ISN’T ENOUGH ROOM TO LIST ALL THE GREATS OF JAZZ that make Jazz the enduring and feel good art form it is. From its deepest roots in the music of our slave culture, into the twenties, thirties and forties, and beyond, this music was and is an American creation. One if it’s most recognized and treasured forms of expression is BIG BAND JAZZ. BIG BAND JAZZ raised the spirits of the troops during WWII. The “famous Japanese disk jockey Tokyo Rose” even broadcast BIG BAND JAZZ to the American troops. She tried to make them homesick, but all she did was make the feel good.
By chance, if you don’t know what I’m talking about; this video will let you hear and feel what BIG BAND SWING IS ALL ABOUT. If you know what I’m talking about, you’ll enjoy it even more. Words can’t touch the good feeling you get when you are SWINGING. Big band swing jazz grabs people of all ages, all over the world. It’s fundamental to American music. For the people of this period, this music has endless memories, mostly good and some not so good.

Back in the late 50s, I was in high school, I played trumpet in a big band jazz band, modeled after Count Basie & Duke Ellington. That’s during the rise of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and we still had a blast. Big Band Jazz is some to the greatest, happiest music ever written. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks. I’ll check it out. I know it’s a later time period. But my Dad also introduced me to Dave Brubeck. “Take Five” and “Time Out” remain my favorites of his.
I learned about this era in my American History class (See “Uncertainty Reduction” blog). Jazz was popping; the styles of dances, clothes, and music like you say were phenomenal. That semester in History class, I thought that I was in a time capsule. Don’t get me started! AHA!
To this day, I still enjoy listening to all sorts of jazz music. Ahhh, your post brings back that wonderful “course” memory. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
